The last major battle of the British Civil Wars was fought out in and around the city of Worcester on 3rd September 1651. With the 375th anniversary of this momentous event now upon us, we felt that the time was right to ask for a succinct reappraisal of the campaign and battle.
To do this, we approached the distinguished military historian of the civil wars. Peter Gaunt is Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Chester and a former President of the Cromwell Association.
In this, the first of two fascinating episodes, Professor Gaunt explains the prelude to the Battle of Worcester, within the wider context of what historians call the Third Civil War. In it he discusses the importance of the Battle of Dunbar and why it was that a Scottish Army crossed the border to invade England for the fourth time in eleven years with publisher Mike Gibbs.
