Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History

Brodie Waddell is Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at Birkbeck, University of London. His research has focused on social, economic and cultural life in England across the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He has published articles on popular writing practices, riot and protest, economic distress, charity and poor relief, and local governance. His first book was God, Duty and Community in English Economic Life, 1660-1720 (Boydell, 2012) and he has been working mostly on the history of petitioning in early modern England since 2019, leading the a funded project on The Power of Petitioning in Seventeenth-Century England. He is co-editor of the journal Cultural and Social History.
